Ascaa

a blog about Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign

Don’t worry, I’m alive..

Howdy everybody, I know.. I suck. I’m really bad at updating. But I’m working on it, and frankly, there’s not much I can show off yet.. However, the new issue (no. 8) is due to come out any day now and THEN I can start to show some of the stuff I’ve been doing lately.

I’ve also made a few painting for my appartment that I’d like to show.. Nothing spectacular, but I still like showing it here on the blog since not everybody are “born” artists, and sometimes it’s nice to realize that you don’t have to be in order to make your own art. Having stuff on the walls made by you makes your home way more personal.

I’ve also made a new logo for an upcoming company, but I can’t show you that either because the company actually needs to excist and be in business first…

…aaand for the next issue (no. 9) I’m actually going to be in it myself! It’s for a page in our magazine where three to four different employees gets to pick four different things they like and approve! Da-da-daaa’ what will I pick!?? ;)

So, hang in there wonderful readers, I’m not dead - I’m just working. Haha..

I’m back at Femina, and I’m loving every second of it.I’ve also gotten a few new tasks and I can’t wait to show you guys!Unfortunately I’ll have to, can’t tell you much until every number is printed and out in the stores each month. But hang in there! This months we’re also in a competition,  “best cover of the month” !Make sure we have the best cover of July and vote for us!

I’m back!

Today was my first day back at Femina, and oh my god am I glad to be back!!
And this time, not as an apprentice, but as a “summer-substitute” or whatever I should call it. The point is I’m staying for atleast 3 months!
Finally, finally I have a real job as a graphic designer!

So it pretty much took me exactly one year after uni from today to get to this point.
"This point" being working at a huge fashion magazine as a layout substitute.
It’s a nice progress! And the best part is that it can get ever better! :)

So, hopefully I’ll start updating you guys a little bit more often now again, since I’ll do graphic design stuff 9-5 I should have something to write about every now and then!
Haha

Hi guys, I haven’t been updating you for a while so I thought I’d hit you with this! This is another layout made by me, and this is my favorite type of layouts.I have pretty much completely free hands, they give me the pictures and the text and the rest is up to me (except for what fonts to use).I just love these type of pages ‘cause theyre so much fun to do, like I’ve said before, it’s sort of like laying a puzzle. It can be annoying at first, but when you start to manage to fit the pieces together so that the page looks good, it’s one of the best feelings in the world! Woho!

I almost forgot to show you this! This is the most recent logo I sold! It’s for a company called Företagsstiftaren. It’s basically a company that helps people who wants to start a company to take over an already existing (but not used) company rather than creating a new one. This eliminates lots of administration and paperwork and it takes much less time than if you were to create a company from scratch.uuuh… Did you understand? haha. Anyways, I sold the logo through creators.se. There are many more freelance websites out there and it’s a smart way for freelancers / students etc to make some extra money every now and then, and also a great way to expand your portfolio! Sorry if this post was a bit messy, but my mind is on vacation today.

Happy Valentine’s Day everybody! How you all doing today? I’m at work now, made a quick illustrator rose for you, haha. Champagne coloured roses are my favourite kind!
However, I’m going to save the rest of the love I hold for later tonight, so now I’m going to talk about something completely different.
Freelance! As many of you know, I’ve made quite a few freelance jobs lately, I actually made a quick one today aswell (cross your fingers and hope it gets sold!). But there’s one thing I’ve always been wondering, but too lazy to look up.What should my hourly wage be?At the beginning, I didn’t want to cost too much. I had just graduated, I was still a bit unsure and a nice portfolio was more important than money. So with other words I knew I was very “cheap”.Now however, I felt that it was time to look it up. So if you guys are wondering, here it is: (atleast in Sweden). Most freelancers take around $60-70/h to their regular customers, around $80-90/h to other costumers and some advertising angencies take up to $160/h for logo’s etc. I don’t know about you guys, wether you freelance or not, but I found this quite good to know, so I just figured I’d share it.(btw, dont know why the rose wont center itself, freaking annoying but what to do?…)

February oh February…

I can’t wait for February to come.. But at the same time I hope it never arrives. Why?
On Feb 1 I’ll get the keys for my very own appartment! I can’t wait until i get to decorate the place JUST the way i want it!! It’s my deam appartment. White, bright, top floor with a tiny balcony that shows the view of a million rooftops. I can see everything but no one can see me. Awesome. Now I even have so many graphic design stuff (going to tell you more about that later) that I can make my own little “graphic designer corner” aswell! Haha. I’m such a nerd.

However, nothing is ever perfect, right?.. When February begins my apprenticeship at Femina ends.. I have a few ideas about what I’m going to do next but, I really don’t want to leave. I love it here! The people, the magazine, everything is perfect! How could anyone want to leave that!? I’ve noticed that I’ve become picky. All of a sudden every magazine just won’t cut it.. As if I have the luxury to be picky right now!? I have a rent to pay and no job.. But you have to be a bit crazy to get somewhere, right? …right!??

Long time no see! And I swear to god I have TWO decent reasons for why I never post anything anymore.. But before I tell you, I’m going to tell you how my apprenticeship has been so far. I love it. I love everything about it and i finally know precisely what i want to work with in the future. Layout is so much fun! Work (something I’ve always imagined would be tough, boring and slooow) is actually something I look forward to every day! I love the way things work at a magazine. How organized and yet “chaotic” everything is. And the best part of it all, that you work together with people as a team. The last few weeks has given me so much. The people at Femina really has tought me a lot and I’m learning new things every day. But the best part is probably that I finally have begun to believe in myself. I can do this! And it warms my heart everytime i hear someone say “very good job Antonia” or letting me know straight out that I have what it takes to become a really good graphic designer! Now for the two reasons on why I’ve been so quiet lately. The first reason is simple: I can’t show you guys anything yet. I have to wait for the magazine to be out in the stores before I can show off my work that’s in it. The second reason is that I’ve had so much to do! I start working at 8-9 and end at 4-5. Normal, I know.. But when I get home I just want to relax. I can’t wait to show you guys the pages that I’ve done so far though! The picture (bad quality again, sorry)  is of my desk at work! Magazines on top of magazines, papers with the new layouts I’m going to do and even more papers with the layouts that I’ve done already! And this pic is AFTER I’ve organized it. So I hope this will give you some more patience. Because new updates are coming, I swear! And with the layouts I’m going to give you some tips that I learned while doing them, so hang in there!

If this isn’t good news, then I don’t know what is.On monday next week I will begin my apparenticeship at Femina, Helsingborg! You have no idea what this means to me. It’s so hard to find a place that knows what they’re doing, and actually have the interest of teaching another person their skills. And the best part is; I love their design! The way they do the layout is just… Awesome!.. That’s the best way I can describe it, atleast for now.So this is my first homework, check the layout and learn about their magazine so that I know what they’re doing right away! "Reading" magazines as homework? I could live with that I suppose.. ;)(btw, I promise I’ll start uploading better pictures asap. I just need to make my macbook and my canon bff’s.)
